How Does DHI Hair Transplantation Work?

DHI hair transplantation works, step by step, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the procedure.

  1. Evaluation and Planning: The first step in DHI hair transplantation is a thorough evaluation of the individual's hair loss pattern, donor area, and overall health. The surgeon will assess the density and quality of the donor hair, which is typically located at the back of the scalp. Based on this evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is created to address the specific needs and goals of the individual.

  2. Preparation and Anesthesia: On the day of the procedure, the individual is prepared for surgery. The recipient and donor areas are cleaned and sterilized. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp, ensuring that the individual remains comfortable throughout the procedure. The surgeon will discuss the anesthesia process and any potential side effects or risks beforehand.

  3. Extraction of Hair Follicles: The next step involves the extraction of hair follicles from the donor area. Unlike traditional hair transplantation methods that use a strip of donor tissue, DHI utilizes a specialized tool called a Choi pen. The Choi pen has a hollow needle attached to it, which is used to extract individual hair follicles. The surgeon carefully selects healthy hair follicles and extracts them using a micro-punch tool.

  4. Implantation of Hair Follicles: Once the hair follicles are extracted, they are loaded into the Choi pen for implantation. The surgeon determines the angle, direction, and depth at which the hair follicles should be implanted to achieve a natural-looking result. The Choi pen allows for precise control and placement of the hair follicles, ensuring a consistent density and mimicking the natural hair growth pattern.

  5. Implantation Technique: Using the Choi pen, the surgeon creates small incisions in the recipient area to accommodate the hair follicles. The pen is then inserted into each incision, and the hair follicle is released at the desired depth. This process is repeated until all the extracted hair follicles are implanted. The surgeon pays close attention to the placement and distribution of the follicles to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and natural result.

  6. Post-Transplant Care: After the procedure, the surgeon provides detailed instructions for post-transplant care. This may include gentle washing techniques, avoiding excessive manipulation or scratching of the transplanted area, and adhering to a recommended care regimen. It is important to follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and optimize the growth of transplanted hair follicles.

  7. Recovery and Results: The recovery period after DHI hair transplantation is relatively short compared to traditional methods. Individuals may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or redness in the first few days, which typically subsides quickly. The transplanted hair follicles enter a resting phase before starting a new growth cycle. It takes several months for the transplanted hair to grow, and full results are usually visible within 8 to 12 months.
